Black Irish Identities: A Symposium

An event every week that begins at 2:00 pm on [day], repeating until September 19, 2015
Does Irishness imply a skin color? Should it? Leading scholars and writers explore the complex historical and cultural issues that influence relations between African-American and Irish-American identities, with a focus on New York City:
· Mick Moloney and Lenwood Sloane present “Two Roads Diverged”
· Colum McCann reads from and discusses his novel, This Side of Brightness
· Harvard Professor Mary C. Waters lectures on “Measuring Race”
· A discussion of “Black and Tan Harlem” with Glucksman Ireland House Professor John Waters and Tara O’Grady
· A performance by the Tara O’Grady Trio
· Peter Quinn
Introductory remarks by GIH Clinical Assistant Professor John Waters.
A reception will be held after the symposium’s conclusion.
This event recognizes the donation of a collection of Anglo-Irish literature to Ireland House by Peter Walsh.
Free admission to Members of Glucksman Ireland House and to all students/faculty with a valid NYU I.D. card. For non-members: $10 donation at the door for the general event series.
