Eamon Gilmore, TD, Former Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Former Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, talks about the Irish economy’s road from IMF bailout toward recovery, followed by a roundtable discussion with members of the business and university communities.

Mr. Gilmore will deliver “From Bailout to Recovery: Prospects for the Irish (and European) Economies.”  He will examine how, over the course of three years, Ireland emerged from an IMF bailout to become one of the fastest growing economies in Europe through the difficult political decisions which were made and the challenges now facing governments in Ireland and in Europe.

After his talk, Mr. Gilmore will be joined by representatives from business and academics to discuss economic issues on the table at the moment and the future of the Irish economy.

Eamon Gilmore, TD, served as Tanaiste (Deputy Prime Minister), and as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, from early 2011 until mid-2014, the period in which Ireland moved from an International Monetary Fund bailout to become one of the fastest growing economies in Europe. During this time he led Ireland’s EU Presidency; chaired the General Affairs Council of the European Union; concluded a six-year multi-annual budget for the EU and he was also Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE.  He was Leader of the Irish Labour Party for seven years, and in 2011, led Labour to its electoral successes to become the second largest party in the Dail for the first time ever.  Eamon grew up on a small farm in the west of Ireland, and was educated at Garbally College, and at Galway University. After graduating, he worked for Ireland’s largest trade union and was head of its Professional and Managerial Branch before his election to the Dáil.
