The Bordeaux-Dublin Letters, 1757: Voices of an Irish Community Abroad

October 25, 2013 @ 9:00 am - October 26, 2013 @ 6:00 pm

It started in 1757 with the capture of an Irish wine ship on its way home from Bordeaux during the Seven Years’ War. Most of the 125 letters carried aboard the Two Sisters of Dublin remained unopened until GIH’s Prof. Thomas Truxes discovered them in a London archive two years ago. The voice of this little-known Irish community in the heart of French wine country will come to life in an exhibit, book, and academic conference centered on the Bordeaux-Dublin Letters and the story of Irish expatriates in the early-modern world.
