Pirates of Irish Persuasion & Extraction (PIPE), Seton Hall’s Irish cultural society, presents a Sacred Arts workshop for beginners: Painting and Gilding a Celtic Dog. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Communication and the Arts.

Join us for an all-new painting workshop to explore the humor and significance of the Celtic Dog, inspired by Ireland’s Book of Kells.

In just one Saturday, at the Seton Hall University Art Studio at 525 South Orange Avenue (directly across the street from the main SHU campus), Seton Hall University, we will host our exploration of the mystery of the creation of Ireland’s famous Book of Kells. Come to enjoy Celtic music and an art historical film describing the use of the dog as a Christian symbol and painting techniques by the monks of Iona and Kells. Did the monks love their foud-legged companions like we do?

At this workshop, we will learn from Workshop Facilitator Terry Galvin Anderson about the traditional art of manuscript illumination and the pigments and minerals that were ground to create beautiful, jeweled colors such as lapis lazuli, malachite and other brilliant materials. We’ll also explore the humor, love of nature, and shape-shifting that characterizes Celtic spirituality while we learn the art of gilding (laying 24K gold) and painting our own Celtic dog. Each participant will go home with a finished piece!

This workshop is for you whether you are a beginner or love to paint.

All instruction, materials, brushes, gold and lunch will be provided for a fee of $20 for full-time Seton Hall University students and $40 for all others.

To register, call PIPE President Carlie Wheeler at (732) 763-7221 or email cjwheelerpipe@gmail.com.

Space is limited to 20 participants; register today!
